How Effective Are Nanomaterials for the Removal of Heavy Metals from Water and Wastewater?

Removal of heavy metal ions (Pb2+ and Ni2+) from aqueous solution using nonwovens produced from lignocellulosic milkweed fibers

Summary: The batch-adsorption technique evaluated the adsorption capacity of nonwovens made from lignocellulosic milkweed fibers for removing heavy metal ions, particularly Pb2+ and Ni2+, from aqueous solutions. The results showed that the equilibrium concentration of heavy metal ions varied with solution pH, with the lowest concentration observed at pH = 6. The removal percentage of Ni2+ ions reached 65.58% at 60 minutes, while Pb2+ ions had a removal percentage of 96.16% at 90 minutes. Operating temperature had a slight impact on the removal percentages of both ions. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models were followed by milkweed fibers for Pb2+ and Ni2+ ions, respectively, with the pseudo-second order model best describing the adsorption kinetics.
