The review clarifies the mechanisms of H-2 production by green microalgae and the physiological role of the [FeFe] hydrogenase in adaptation of these organisms to varying environmental conditions, primarily to anaerobiosis. The work is focused at interrelationships and mutual regulation between biological hydrogen production, photosynthetic electron transport, fermentation and oxygen uptake under anaerobiosis.
