Flow field plays an important role in the design and application of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The superiority of flow field is commonly evaluated by comparing the performance improvement of PEMFC. However, it's necessary to decrease the flow resistance to reduce the parasitic power and to obtain more uniform water and gas distributions during operation. As a consequence, the combined effect of performance and resistance should be considered during the optimal design of flow channel in PEMFC. A new criterion of efficiency evaluation criterion (EEC) using Sherwood number and Euler number has been proposed to evaluate the relationship between the mass transfer and the pressure drop in this study. The performances of PEMFCs with parallel, single-serpentine, and pressured parallel flow fields are investigated in detail. The results show that PEMFC with single-serpentine flow field has a better performance under normal atmospheric pressure, while the pressure drop in cathode is much larger than that in the parallel flow field. The pressured parallel flow field presents better performance and uniform gas distribution and it is thus proposed as the flow channel in the application of PEMFC.
