Production linkages and dynamic fiscal employment effects of the extractive industries: input-output and nonlinear ARDL analyses of Azerbaijani economy

Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada et al.

Summary: The petroleum sector in Azerbaijan has relatively weak production linkages and employment effects on the rest of the economy. Despite initial growth, both production and job creation multipliers slightly decreased after the first 3 years of the oil boom. Additional investments in processing, construction, and network industries have the highest production linkages, while agriculture, education, health care, and the public sector have the greatest job creation effects.

Addressing the growth and employment effects of the extractive industries: white and black box illustrations from Kazakhstan

Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada

Summary: This study investigates the production and employment effects stemming from the extractive industries of Kazakhstan using static input-output models and dynamic nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag models. The results indicate strong links between extractives and domestic manufacturing, with commodity revenues positively impacting manufacturing value added and aggregate employment rate. Kazakhstan's manufacturing sector shows resilience to downward movements in commodity revenues, with no asymmetries detected in job creation effects.
