Synergy between farmers' knowledge of soil quality change and scientifically measured soil quality indicators in Wanka watershed, northwestern highlands of Ethiopia

Wondwosen Abera et al.

Summary: Farmers in the Wanka watershed in Ethiopia were found to have a good understanding and perception of soil quality changes, with their assessments closely correlating with scientifically measured indicators. This indicates the importance of incorporating farmers' soil knowledge in sustainable land management practices. The study showed that farmers' assessments of soil quality were in line with major scientific quantitative indicators, with plots perceived as good quality exhibiting better soil nutrients.

Climate smart agriculture extension: gender disparities in agroforestry knowledge acquisition

Colm Duffy et al.

Summary: In Malawi, traditional extension methods such as NGO trainers and farmer clubs helped both male and female farmers increase their knowledge in climate smart agriculture. However, female farmers experienced less improvement compared to male farmers. Interaction with lead farmers increased the likelihood of knowledge improvement for female farmers, but their impact was limited by mobility and availability constraints.
