A facile synthesis of chiral cis beta-hydroxy ketones was successfully developed through ruthenium-catalyzed transfer hydrogenative desymmetrization of 1,3-cyclopentanedione. The experiment on gram scale could be performed without loss of reactivity and enantioselectivity.
