Robert Furchgott (1916-2009): A scientist with a mission

Ronald P. Rubin

Summary: Robert Furchgott was recognized for his groundbreaking research on drug-receptor theory, autonomic neuroeffector mechanisms, and vascular pharmacology/physiology. His discovery of nitric oxide as the endothelium relaxing factor revolutionized the understanding of vascular physiology, leading to new treatments for hypertension and heart disease. Furchgott's work was instrumental in the development of the anti-impotence drug sildenafil and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998.
