One new griseofulvin derivative, (+)-5-chlorogriseofulvin (1), together with two known analogues, griseofulvin (2) and dechlorogriseofulvin (3), was isolated from the marine-derived fungus Arthrinium sp. collected from the South China Sea. The structure of the new compound was elucidated on the basis of NMR spectroscopic data and on the basis of the CD experiments compared with those of 2 and 3. Compound 1 exhibited moderate lethality against the brine shrimp Artemia salina with an LC50 value of 25 mu g/mL. All the compounds showed weak antibacterial activity against Dysentery bacillus and Micrococcus luteus with an MIC value of 100 mu M.
