Keeping in mind the potential usefulness of mixed ionic liquid (IL)-cosolvents systems in several industrial applications, intermolecular interactions between a borate-based IL, bis(1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-i um-3-yl)dihydroborate bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([BIMIMDBA][TF2N]), and its binary mixtures with several molecular solvents has been investigated through NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. Analysis of the H-1 chemical shifts (delta/ppm) and translational diffusion coefficients (D) of the IL in different solvent mixtures demonstrate interplay of nonspecific (ion-dipole) and specific (hydrogen bonding) interactions in governing the properties of these mixtures. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy data provide evidence in favour of different IL-solvent interaction for different IL-cosolvent systems.
