Study on the oxidative characteristics of organics in bio-treated textile wastewater by VUV/US/O3 process

Bio-treated textile wastewater has potential perniciousness to aquatic environment due to the residual hazardous organics. Herein, a highly efficient mult-oxidation system combined with ultraviolet photolysis, ultrasound radiation and 03 was built to treat bio-treated textile wastewater. By Amberlite XAD-4/XAD-8 resins, fluorescence spectrometer and OF membranes, respectively, the effluent organics in wastewater were separated into different fractions based on polarity (hydrophobic/hydrophilic), fluorescence and molecule size. During the 120 min reaction, ADMI, DOC, COD and UV254 removal rates in the VUV/US/O-3 process were reached up to 95.31%, 61.6%, 72.05% and 93.7%, respectively. Bio-treated textile wastewater mainly consists of hydrophobic substances which were transformed to hydrophilic substances with simple structure during the VUV/US/O-3 process. Most abundant fluorescence portion in bio-treated textile wastewater was tryptophan-like, and simple aromatic protein-like and humic acid like were relatively readily removed by VUV/US/O-3. Plenty of large and complicated molecule structures had transformed into small and simple molecule structures. Capsule: The work provided a further research about a highly efficient oxidative method (VUV/US/O-3) applied in the advanced treatment of textile wastewater with low concentration of organics.
