A dense, uniform, crack free and well-bonded oxidation-protective mullite coating was successfully fabricated on SiC-coated carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by a novel hot dipping process. XRD and EDS line scanning analyses shows that the phase of the coating is composed of mullite and the bonding coating between the coating and C/C composites is composed of SiC and Si. Besides, SEM images of the surface and cross-section of the coating also display the dense microstructure. The mullite/SiC coating was found to protect C/C composites from oxidation at 1773 K for 168 h with a weight loss rate of only 3.9 x 10(-5) g cm(-2) h(-1).
