Stress and Western diets increase vulnerability to neuropsychiatric disorders: A common mechanism

Alexies Dagnino-Subiabre

Summary: Stress and Western diets are major environmental risk factors for neuropsychiatric disorders. The interaction between dietary long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), endocannabinoids, and stress may affect brain physiology and vulnerability to these disorders. An over-activation of the endocannabinoid system in limbic areas due to increased n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio in neurons' plasma membrane may lead to excitatory/inhibitory imbalance and synchronization issues in brain areas controlling stress responses.
