An Argument for Action Research-Inspired Participatory Mapping

Laura Saija et al.

Summary: Participatory mapping in planning has garnered both enthusiasm and criticism, with some scholars accusing it of being superficial and powerless in dealing with substantial issues and power dynamics. This article presents an example of participatory mapping and planning in the Simeto valley in Italy, highlighting the importance of reframing participatory mapping through action research to effectively address power dynamics and substantial issues. The effectiveness of action research-based mapping lies not in the mappers' ability to map spatial changes, but in the impact it has on the mappers themselves.
