An unprecedented photo/NHC-co-catalyzed ring-opening C-C bond cleavage of cyclopropane enal and the following gamma-alkylation with a halogenated compound via radicals were established, affording the corresponding gamma-alkylated alpha,beta-unsaturated esters in moderate to good yields.
