A water-soluble carbon nitride (WSCN) was synthesized through a molten-salt assisted thermal polymerization method. The WSCN has a remarkable red-shifted absorption and could catalytically oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) without exogenous H2O2 to produce a color reaction under lambda > 470 nm light illumination. The TMB/WSCN system can be employed for colorimetric detection of ascorbic acid. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
