Three-dimensional hierarchical sphere with Sn quantum dot decorated on the porous N-doped carbon framework (NC) is successfully prepared via a simple spray drying process and subsequent calcination treatment. The porous Sn/NC composite displays outstanding properties for lithium ion battery with a large capacity of 589 mAh g(-1) and robust stability. This may result from the synergistic effect between the porous structure, the carbon network and Sn quantum-dots, which can cushion the volume expansion of the electrode material.
