This short review article provides an insight into the synthetic chemistry involved in the formation of bismuth based versatile frameworks. A unique feature of bismuth compounds is their ability to undergo hydrolysis to produce oxido/hydroxido clusters of various sizes and nuclearities which ultimately produce bismuth based oxides and sulphides for numerous advanced applications. The pertinent reported synthetic routes for such type of compounds are briefly reviewed here. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
