Liquid crystals carrying heterocyclic moieties are soft functional materials with immense technological impetus due to their unique optical properties. The central core units, linking moieties and terminal chains are playing a vital role in designing a superior mesogenic material. Structures containing six membered rings are prevalent as liquid crystals, but mesomorphic materials with rings other than six membered has not received much attention because of its non-linearity and reduced mesophase stability. It is therefore important to spread the molecular design of mesogens to include other ring systems from theoretical as well as from practical point of view. This article highlights the comprehensive research on the relationships between structural and liquid crystalline properties of 1,2,3/1,2,4-triazole derivatives. This review offers an adaptable method to core triazole structures with unexplored but encouraging possibilities, not only from a liquid crystal point of view, but also for other materials which involves compact and controllable supramolecular packing.
