To further enhance the properties of batteries, it is important to exploit new electrode materials. Carbon fiber has been found to play a crucial role. Various batteries, such as Lithium-ion batteries, Lithium-sulfur batteries, Sodium-ion batteries, and Vanadium redox flow batteries, have been investigated. Moreover, greatly improved performance has been obtained by compositing pure carbon fibers with the metal materials, metallic oxide materials, metallic sulfide materials, carbon materials and so on. Through the application of carbon materials and their compounds in various types of batteries, the battery performance has obviously been improved. This review primarily introduces carbon fiber materials for battery applications. The relationship between the architecture of the material and its electrochemical performance is analyzed in detail. In addition, the development of the history, unsolved problems and prospects with respect to the introduction of carbon fibers are also included.
