In this article we proposed a hexagonal photonic crystal fiber with two large elliptical air holes in the internal cladding region. It has high birefringence 3.93x10(-3), low confinement loss 0.06261dB/m and 0.38538dB/m for x and y polarized mode respectively at 1.55 mu m propagating wavelength and zero dispersion wavelength in near infrared region. It also gives high relative sensitivity- 49.42% for x polarized mode. This proposed fiber has many advantages like, simple structure, small volume, low loss, high birefringence, zero dispersion wavelength, long sensing range, high relative sensitivity, robustness etc. This fiber has considerable fabrication tolerance. It can be used for multipurpose applications, such as low loss and polarization maintaining devices, laser technology, telecommunication, refractive index sensing and bio-medical applications.
