Inspired by the microstructure of nacre with orderly layered bricks and mortars, graphene oxide (GO) for its two-dimensional geometry and waterborne styrene butadiene rubber (wSBR) as a sort of soft material with distinctive pressure sensitive performance was selected to construct nacre-like bio-inspired graphene oxide/waterborne styrene butadiene rubber composite (B-GO/wSBRc). The B-GO/wSBRc exhibited excellent reusable anti-corrosion performances due to biomimetic layered GO. After a secondary salt-spray test, the composite still held outstanding protective efficiency (above 99%). In addition, the exceptional architecture on improvement in aspects of anti-corrosion performances were discussed and confirmed from four aspects in theories and experiments: (i) no micro-pore morphology of B-GO/wSBRc, (ii) fortified dispersivity of GO in wSBR, (iii) maximization of the diffusion path of electrolyte and (iv) enhanced pi-pi stacking between GO and wSBR. The B-GO/wSBRc will pave a new avenue and guidance towards bio-inspired GO composites for the eco-friendly anti-corrosion strategy.
