In optical frequencies, natural materials exhibit very weak magneto-optical effect. This weak effect can be easily recognized in the dielectric tensor where the ratio between the imaginary off-diagonal and diagonal components is extremely small. Here, we show that man-made metamaterials can greatly enhance this ratio, leading to an extraordinarily enhanced magneto-optical effect. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.
