The marine sponge Ircinia strobilina crude extract (ISCE) was analyzed as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1 mol L-1 HCl. The corrosion behavior was evaluated using weight loss method, potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show an increase in anticorrosive efficiency as ISCE concentrations increase (from +/- 55% at 0.5 g L-1 to +/- 82% at 2.0 g L-1). The surface was examined by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The composition of the crude extract was chemically characterized by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. The protection mechanism was discussed. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
