This work provides a brief review of the crystal structure, compositional scope, structural phase transitions, superconductivity, magnetism, and heavy-fermion behavior in the vast family of ternary intermetallics that belong to the ThCr2Si2 structure type. The intriguing physical properties observed for a number of ThCr2Si2-type materials are discussed relative to the features of their electronic band structure.
