A readily available thioxanthone derivative, 3,6-dimethoxy-9H-thioxanthen-9-one, has been utilized as an effective catalyst for the conjugate radical addition of 1,3-dioxolane to alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids under light irradiation. Based on the experimental observations, involvement of a radical generation process via a single-electron transfer (SET) has been proposed.
