Working in an abrasive particle environment is considered to be the primary cause of a seal failure. The friction behaviour of FKM O-rings was studied under three-body abrasion conditions, as a function of particle homogeneity, and was discussed in detail. Under the non-uniform abrasive particle size condition, only wear scar caused by large-grained particles can be clearly seen. Due to the seal damage extent led by large particles had been aggravated while led by smaller particles had been depressed. This kind of particularity was defined as nonuniform particle size effects, which could be explained partially by various loads that particles sustained in sliding interface. From the present work, the insights on the friction behaviour of seal was understood and reported.
