Gas exchange measurement as a non-destructive viability assay for frozen-thawed, winter-dormant apple buds

C. Vogiatzi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of a portable gas exchange system to rapidly discriminate between live and dead winter-dormant buds, with subsequent micropropagation confirming its non-destructive nature. 85% of the Malus domestica buds population exhibited active respiration, with a 91% viability rate when grafted. Furthermore, there was a significant, positive correlation between fresh weight and respiration for buds with a mass greater than 10 mg.
