Two neutral polyoxotantalates {[CuL](2)[Cu(L)(2)](2)[Ta6O19]}center dot nH(2)O have been synthesized by conventional reaction conditions, and characterized via different physical methods. Single-crystal X-ray analyses were carried out on {[CuL](2)[CuL2](2)[Ta6O19]}center dot 21H(2)O (L = 1,10-phen, denoted as 1) and the isostructural {[CuL](2)[CuL2](2)[Ta6O19)}center dot 20H(2)O (L' = 2,2'-bipy, denoted as 2). Both complexes comprise a Lindqvist [Ta6O59](8-) hexatantalate which acts as an octadentate ligand to coordinate two [CuL) units and two [CuL2) fragments through six bridging and two terminal oxygen atoms. In addition, the solid-state magnetic susceptibility of 1 and 2 are investigated briefly.
