Most practical shielding enclosure is not complete, which brings challenge for the application of traditional shielding materials. For the first time, this letter reveals that the subwave-length periodic shielding material could generate the hybrid lossy surface wave mode, which highly increases the propagation loss and enhances the shielding effectiveness (SE) in the incomplete enclosure. Experiment implemented on the practical chip, which applies the patterned subwavelength periodic polypropylene and carbon black composite, demonstrates a 5-dB enhancement of SE in a wide frequency range (12-28 GHz).
