Recent work published by Rovis, Schoenebeck, and co-workers in Nature Chemistry describes a synergistic CO2 mediation and photocatalysis strategy for challenging alpha-alkylation of primary aliphatic amines by using quinuclidine as a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalyst for gamma-lactam synthesis. Electrostatic attraction between the in-situ-generated carbamate and quinuclidinium radical cation is critical for the selectivity.
