Detection of biomacromolecules from various complex matrices is significant because of their functions in numerous biological processes, and efficient extraction before analysis is highly required due to the severe interference from sample matrices. So far, solid phase extraction (SPE) is still one of the most effective approaches to enrich biomacromolecules. Among all solid-phase sorbents in biomacromolecule extraction, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) stand out by virtue of their ultrahigh specific surface area, well-defined pore structure, tunable chemistry and efficient size exclusion effect etc. In this review, we provide an updated and essential summary about applications of MOFs as advanced solid sorbents in biomacromolecule extraction. Moreover, three major trends including improvement of water stability, enhancement of extraction selectivity, and development of on-line extraction are also presented to provide new perspectives in MOF-based sample preparation for better advancement.
