A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile and strictly aerobic novel bacterial isolate, designated strain K1W11S-77(T), was obtained from a water sample that was collected from a karst cave in Guizhou province, PR China. The results of a phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that K1W11S-77(T) represented a member of the genus Crenobacter within the family Neisseriaceae of the phylum Proteobacteria. K1W11S-77(T) was phylogenetically closely related to Crenobacter luteus YIM 78141(T) (Their 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity is 95.02 %). Growth of K1W11S-77(T) occurred at 10-30 degrees C, at pH 7-9, and in the presence of 0-1 % (w/v) NaCl. The major cellular fatty acids were C-12:0, C-16(:0), C-18(:1)omega 7C and summed feature 3. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and one unidentified phospholipid. The genome of K1W11S-77(T) was 3.27 Mb long and encoded 3167 annotated genes. The DNA G+C content of the genomic DNA was 65.3 mol%. On the basis of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, K1W11S-77(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Crenobacter, for which the name Crenobacter cavernae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is K1W11S-77(T) (=CGMCC 1.13527(T)=NBRC 113452(T)).
