A near-infrared emission fluorescent viscosity probe (TPE-V) which contains multi-rotatable moieties has been developed for the first time. TPE-V exhibited a large Stokes shift (190 nm) and a large enhancement in fluorescence intensity (100-fold) in response to viscosity. Moreover, TPE-V was successfully applied for the detection of mitochondrial viscosity in an inflammatory cell model.
