The one-pot conversion of fructose to gamma-valerolactone (GVL) in GVL as solvent was confirmed by monitoring the dehydration of C-13(6)-D-fructose to C-13(6)-5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde (C-13(6)-HMF), the hydration of C-13(6)-HMF to C-13(5)-levulinic and C-13-formic acids, followed by their conversion to C-13(5)-GVL.
