Carbonylation of metal carbene complexes, including the carbonylation of Group VI Fischer carbenes, is reviewed in this article. In particular, transition metal-catalyzed carbonylation of metal carbene complexes with carbon monoxide is discussed in detail. This type of carbonylation reactions provides an efficient access to ketene species, which are highly important in organic synthesis.
