The subglacial channels of Elsterian age are the dominating morph-structural features of the Quaternary sequence of the lowland of Northern Germany. The deep subglacial channels were formed exclusively in the area of weakly compacted and water saturated sediments, where the advance of the inland ice caused hydrostatic overpressure. Their extremely deep incision resulted from the combination of several endo- and exogenetic land forming processes.
