Choosing a suitable advanced quay crane (Q/C) is a complex problem for terminal operators because numerous factors must be considered simultaneously. A two-phased method is developed in this study to deal with this problem. The first phase identities the determinants influencing selection of advanced Q/Cs by applying exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and thereby constructs a hierarchical structure. The second phase applies fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to compare alternatives in terms of the structure established in the first phase. The case of the newest terminal at Kaohsiung port is studied empirically and the 40-foot twin-lift Q/C is chosen as the most suitable alternative. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
