The facile preparation of N(H)-bridged azacalix[4]arenes has been achieved by stepwise nucleophilic aromatic substitutions assisted by hydrogen bonding interactions. The synthesis is uncatalyzed and affords previously unknown tetranitroazacalix[4]arenes. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
