A novel and efficient approach for the synthesis of phosphine-containing alpha-amino acids bearing quaternary carbon is described. The key step involves the original nucleophilic addition of lithiated phosphines onto acyclic ene-carbamates concomitant with a spontaneous internal (N -> C) alkyloxycarbonyl migration.
