The catalytic enantioselective electrophilic alpha-amination promoted by chiral bifunctional organocatalysts is described. Treatment of alpha-cyanoketones with azodicarboxylates as electrophilic amination reagents under mild reaction conditions afforded the corresponding alpha-aminated alpha-cyanoketones with excellent enantiomeric excesses (87-99%).
