A new type of ring-like architecture with lamellar structure was prepared via a simple hydrothermal strategy. The phase purity, morphology, and structure of pristine and PdO-decorated NiO nanostructures are investigated. The characterizations reveal that the ring-like PdO-NiO are assembled by a large amount of interconnected nanosheets with a thickness of about 15 nm. To demonstrate the usage of such ring-like hybrid materials, gas sensors have been fabricated from the as-synthesized ring-like pristine NiO and PdO-NiO lamellar structures for CO detection. The PdO-NiO sensor exhibits significantly improved sensing performances in terms of higher response, lower working temperature, better selectivity, rapidder response time, and better reproducibility in comparison with pristine NiO. The effects of PdO decorating on the CO-sensing properties of ring-like NiO lamellar structure have been investigated. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
