A series of Rhodamine B derivative was synthesized and characterized by NMR, HR-MS and IR. The probes exhibited highly selective and sensitive recognition toward Fe3+ over other metal ions. The significant changes in the fluorescence color could be used for naked-eye detection. The Job's plot, MS, IR and H-1 NMR indicated the formation of 1:2 complexes between 1 and Fe3+. The reversibility establishes the potential of these probes as chemosensors for Fe3+ detection. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
