An optical fiber sensor based on evanescent field is proposed for detecting ammonia emission using nanocrystalline tin oxide (SnO2) as sensing material. The spectral characteristics of the sensor were studied for different concentrations of ammonia (100-1000 ppm). The sensor shows linear variations in the output light intensity with the concentration. The time response characteristics of the sensor are reported.
