Synchrotron radiation diffraction has been used to evaluate the evolution of internal elastic strains within the magnesium and the long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase in an Mg97Y2Zn1Gd0.5 (at.%) alloy during in situ tensile testing. During plastic deformation, the LPSO phase carries an additional load transferred by magnesium grains due to its higher Young's modulus. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
