A remarkably high tensile yield strength of 445 MPa is obtained in a Mg-14Gd-0.5Zr (wt.%) alloy when this alloy is prepared by the combined processes of hot extrusion, cold rolling and ageing. This significant improvement in strength is associated with a denser distribution of precipitates, an intensive basal texture and a refined grain size. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc.
