Two millimeter Ni-Ta bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were realized over a composition range of 59-62 at.% Ni. According to the cluster-plus-glue-atom model, this composition range can be expressed by a cluster formula [MNi(6)Ta(6)]Ni(3), where M ranges from Ni to Nb. These alloys show a glass transition temperature T(g) of about 993 K, the highest among known BMG alloys. They also have a wide undercooled liquid region Delta T(x) = T(x) - T(g) exceeding 50 K. These BMGs exhibit ultrahigh strengths of about 3.5 GPa. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
