The compression properties of coke were investigated at slow strain rates, using a traditional Instron materials tester. To further characterize the failure mechanism, X-ray microtomography was used to visually examine the internal deformation of the coke during compression. It was found that the coke samples failed in a progressive layering manner, and were still able to maintain load for the duration of the compression test.
