The surface of Ni-free Zr60Ti6Cu20Fe5Al10 bulk metallic glass (BMG) was modified to be bioactive by using the micro-arc oxidation technique. A rough and porous oxide layer mainly containing tetragonal ZrO2 and amorphous SiO2 incorporating some Ca and P was formed. This layer adhered very well to the BMG substrate and exhibited a superior biocompatibility. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
