The use of plant made pharmaceuticals began with production of monoclonal antibodies in tobacco plant. As preparation of monoclonal antibodies in mammalian cells is costly, researchers are finding ways to develop monoclonal antibodies in plant cells. The selected plant-made pharmaceuticals are glucocerebrosidase for Gaucher disease, alpha interferon for hepatitis C, insulin for diabetes, and lipase for cystic fibrosis.
