With millions of farmers each year moving to its burgeoning cities, China is searching for novel ways to expand urban areas while conserving natural resources. Shanghai is hoping to show that development can be environmentally responsible with the world's first carbon neutral city, in which carbon emissions would be completely offset by carbon absorption.
